What size bike does my child need?

Kids' bikes are sized by wheel size, not frame size, from 12 inch for toddlers up to 24 inches for older kids. The best guide is your child's height and inside leg rather than age alone, so they can sit with their feet down and reach the brakes comfortably. Should I get a balance bike or training wheels?

Most experts now recommend starting with a balance bike. Because kids learn to balance first, they usually skip training wheels altogether and move straight to a pedal bike, often much younger. Training wheels are fine too, but children can lean on them and take longer to learn real balance.

What age can a child start on a balance bike?

Most kids are ready for a balance bike from around 18 months to 2 years, once they can walk confidently and comfortably straddle the bike with their feet flat on the ground. Height matters more, so the main thing is that they fit the bike and are keen to have a go.
