Share
So, you've got a bike and you're ready to hit the road. But wait, how are you going to transport your two-wheeled buddy? With so many different bike racks out there, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one. Don't worry, we've got you covered with this epic guide to help you pick the perfect bike rack for your needs.
1. Towball Bike Rack
Looking for a sturdy and reliable option? The towball bike rack might be the one for you. Just hook it up to your car's towball, secure your bike, and you're good to go. It's a classic choice that never goes out of style.
Please double-check your towball when making a purchase, as not all cars come with the correct towball size. The most common is the ISO 50mm Towball.
2. Hitch Bike Rack
Want something easy to install and remove? The hitch bike rack is your best bet. Simply slide it into your car's hitch receiver, tighten the safety bolts, load up your bike, and you're off on your next adventure. It's a breeze to use!
This type of bike rack is recommended for E-bikes due to how they distribute the weight and are more capable of carrying bigger loads.
3. Trunk Bike Rack
Short on space or no towbar? The trunk bike rack is compact, lightweight, and perfect for smaller vehicles. Just strap it onto your trunk using the provided straps, secure your bike, and you're ready to roll. It's a great option for city dwellers.
4. Roof Bike Rack
Roof bike racks are great for quickly unloading and loading your bike, and unlike other bike racks, they stay attached full-time and don't get in the way. The roof bike rack is a sleek and stylish choice. Mount your bike on the roof of your car and turn heads as you drive by. Just be careful not to forget your bike is up there when you pull into the garage!
Please note: You do need a rack system on your roof for the bike rack to attach to. Not included with the bike racks.
5. Tailgate Bike Rack
The tailgate bike rack is the easiest and most convenient option. The tailgate stays on full time and generally does not obstruct the loading of other things when wanting to use the ute tray. Simply attach it to the back of your truck, load up your bikes, and enjoy a fun day out with friends. Just remember to pack the cooler too!
Only downfall is, it requires a ute!
6. Vertical Bike Rack
Short on horizontal space? Go vertical with a vertical bike rack. These bike racks are great for saving space and being able to load up to 5 bikes (depending on the bike rack you purchase) and are designed to make the unloading and loading process as simple as possible.
The bikes attach to the top on a hanger and are then strapped in at the bottom via the wheel.
With so many different bike racks to choose from, there's definitely one that fits your needs and style. Whether you're a weekend warrior, a city commuter, or an outdoor enthusiast, there's a bike rack out there for you. So, pick the one that speaks to you and hit the road with your trusty steed in tow!

Bike Rack Quick Tips For Safety And Guidance:
Bike Rack Weight Limit
Please also check the maximum weight that the bike carrier can take per bike, especially with E-Bikes as they are heavier. Make sure you do not exceed this limit.
Straps
Always strap down your bike where possible; it is better to be overly secure than undersecured.
License Plate Holders
Some bike racks obscure your license plate. Most bike racks can be ordered with a number plate holder, and then you would need to purchase a supplementary license plate; this is normally done at NZTA.
Batteries on your E-Bike
If your E-Bike allows you to remove your battery, this is always a good idea when travelling with your bike on the bike rack. It helps reduce the weight of the bike.
General Maintenance and Care
As always, your equipment needs to be taken care of, so please, if you keep your bike rack on full time, check the bolts for the bike rack and towball and make sure everything is good! As things can get loose over time and you don't want anything bad to happen on your trip!
